Unfortunately, the current model Dension Active Cradle does NOT support 5v USB charging (their website seems to indicate they are in the process of updating many of their products, so this may change). All other current models only charge via the 5v USB pin. As of this edit (3/26/09), the ONLY current model iPod that can still be charged via the 12v Firewire pin is the "iPod Classic". Unfortunately, with the last round of iPod updates, Apple removed the ability to charge via the 12v Firewire pin on most models. Update on March 26, 2009: Until a few months ago, ALL iPods with a dock connector had the ability to be charged via either the 12v Firewire pin or the 5v USB pin on the dock connector. This time, I've tried to include all of the necessary information for all connections and pinouts (information that was once contained on those pages that now have broken links). I've finally finished editing those photos and I've posted a brand new "Ultimate iPod Docking Solution" installation page here: Soldering wires to the female 8-pin MiniDIN took some patience and care and I had to use some very small heat-shrink tubing to insulate the connections, but that was MUCH easier than dealing with those tiny wires inside the Dension Cradle cable (I cut off the DIN plug last time, and regretted it).Īfter gathering all of the other necessary parts, I spent a good portion of the day on Thursday updating the install and taking photos. I also ordered a female 8-pin MiniDIN from M圜 ( Female~ic~C8DSF.htm) so I wouldn't have to cut off the male 8-pin MiniDIN from the Dension cable. MASS is now the North American distributor for Dension products (Dension USA is no longer affiliated with Dension Europe, the makers of the Dension iPod Cradle). I ordered a new Dension iPod Cradle from MASS Electronics () in Canada. With those facts in mind, I decided to once again update my iPod install and document the process. Now, if you used proper soldering and installation techniques, I feel the possiblity of a short is extremely unlikely. Also, it came to my attention that Dension had updated their iPod cradle design so that it mounts more securely (the original one could twist a bit when using it) and Dension now includes various cradle inserts to allow use with any size iPod having a dock connector (as of February 2007).įurther, it was recently brought to my attention (by Jeff Andersen) that an In-Line fuse is needed on the +12v coming from the factory radio to protect against any possible shorts to vehicle ground. Unfortunately, all of the links on that first page have long since been broken, making the page of less-than-desired usefullness. Later, when I got an iPod with dock connector, I updated my custom iPod install and detailed the installation of a Dension iPod Cradle in THIS () thread. Three years ago, I created THIS () page detailing my project to install an iPod in my Miata. Important: See the updates at the bottom of this message!
